How to quickly troubleshoot common faults in wire drawing machines?
The wire drawing machine is the core equipment in the field of metal wire processing, and its stable operation directly affects production efficiency and product quality. If common faults cannot be quickly eliminated, it can easily lead to prolonged downtime and increased costs. Based on practical production experience, this article summarizes the causes and quick troubleshooting methods of six common faults in wire drawing machines to help operators efficiently solve problems.
1、 Wire breakage fault
Phenomenon: Sudden breakage of wire during the drawing process is one of the most frequent faults.
Core reason:
Defects in the wire itself (such as surface cracks, inclusions, uneven hardness);
Excessive or unstable tension in the incoming line;
Mismatch of mold hole type (too small hole size, severe wear);
Insufficient lubrication or poor quality of lubricating fluid;
The drawing speed is too fast, exceeding the limit that the wire can withstand.
Quick exclusion steps:
Check the wire: observe whether there are cracks or inclusions at the broken wire, and if there are, replace the qualified wire;
Adjust tension: Reduce the incoming tension by balancing the tension wheel or pneumatic tension device (you can try adjusting it by 5% -10% first);
Check the mold: Measure the hole diameter of the mold with a caliper. If the wear exceeds 0.02mm, replace the mold with a new one; If there are foreign objects (such as metal shavings) inside the hole, clean them with a special copper rod;
Lubrication system: Check the lubricant level and replenish it if it is insufficient; Take samples to test the viscosity of the lubricant, and replace it if it deteriorates; Ensure that the nozzle is aligned with the mold hole and the flow rate is normal;
Reduce speed: temporarily reduce the speed of the wire drawing machine (10% -15%) and observe if the wire is still broken.
2、 Abnormal pulling force (too large/too small)
Phenomenon: The equipment load is too high (the ammeter reading exceeds the standard) or the wire tension is insufficient (the diameter is too thick).
Core reason:
Excessive pulling force: small mold aperture, poor lubrication, high wire hardness;
Low pulling force: The mold aperture is too large, the wire is too soft (excessive annealing), and the tension is insufficient.
Quick exclusion steps:
Mold inspection: Compare the standard aperture and replace the corresponding mold if the deviation exceeds 0.01mm;
Lubrication optimization: increase lubricant flow or replace high viscosity lubricant (for excessive);
Wire hardness: If the pulling force is too high, test the wire hardness (such as Rockwell hardness). If it exceeds the standard, adjust the annealing process; If it is too small, check if the annealing temperature is too high;
Tension adjustment: When the pulling force is too small, increase the incoming tension appropriately (under the premise of avoiding wire breakage).
3、 Surface quality issues of wire (scratches/oxidation/burrs)
Phenomenon: Scratches, black spots (oxidation) or edge burrs appear on the surface of the wire, affecting the product qualification rate.
Core reason:
Scratches: foreign objects inside the mold, worn guide wheels, friction between wires and equipment components;
Oxidation: lubricant temperature is too high (>60 ℃), wire preheating is excessive, lubricant contains moisture;
Burrs: Wear on the cutting edge of the mold, defects on the edge of the wire, uneven drawing speed.
Quick exclusion steps:
Scratch treatment: Clean the foreign objects in the mold hole and replace the worn guide wheel (if the surface roughness is greater than Ra0.8 μ m, it needs to be replaced); Check the wire path to avoid friction with the rack;
Oxidation treatment: Turn on the lubricant cooling system (reduce the temperature to 40-50 ℃) to reduce the wire preheating time; Check the water content of the lubricant, and replace it if it exceeds the standard;
Burr treatment: Grind the cutting edge of the mold (using a diamond grinding wheel) or replace the mold with a new one; Check if there are any burrs on the edge of the incoming line, and if so, handle the incoming line first.
4、 Equipment abnormal noise
Phenomenon: Abnormal noise occurs during operation (such as bearing noise, gear impact sound).
Core reason:
Bearing abnormal noise: lack of oil, wear (ball/raceway damage);
Gear noise: excessive gear clearance, insufficient lubrication, and worn tooth surfaces;
Motor abnormal noise: bearing failure, unstable voltage.
Quick exclusion steps:
Bearing inspection: Use a stethoscope to determine the location of the abnormal noise. If it is a bearing, stop the machine for inspection and replenish lubricating grease (such as lithium based grease). If it is severely worn, replace it;
Gear treatment: Check the oil level of the gearbox and replenish the gear oil; If the clearance is too large, adjust the gear mesh clearance (requires professional operation);
Motor detection: Measure whether the motor voltage is stable (within ± 5%), check the motor bearings, and replace them if necessary.
5、 Lubrication system malfunction
Phenomenon: Lubricating fluid leakage, insufficient pressure, or abnormal flow rate.
Core reason:
Leakage: Damaged seals (pump body, pipeline joints);
Insufficient pressure: pump malfunction, clogged filter screen, pipeline leakage;
Insufficient flow: nozzle blockage, low pump speed.
Quick exclusion steps:
Leakage treatment: replace damaged sealing rings (such as O-rings), tighten pipeline joints;
Pressure adjustment: Clean the filter screen (remove and blow it clean with compressed air), check if the pump is running normally (replace if the pump is not working);
Flow optimization: unclog the nozzle (using fine wire) and adjust the pump speed to the rated value.
6、 Tension control system malfunction
Phenomenon: The tension fluctuates between large and small, resulting in uneven stretching of the wire (diameter fluctuation).
Core reason:
Calibration failure of tension sensor;
Controller parameter error (such as PID parameters);
The tension roller is worn or stuck.
Quick exclusion steps:
Calibrate the sensor: recalibrate the tension sensor with a standard weight and check if the circuit is loose;
Adjust parameters: Based on the wire specifications, reset the tension value and PID parameters of the controller (such as proportional gain and integration time);
Check the tension roller: clean the foreign objects on the roller surface, replace if worn, and ensure that the roller rotates flexibly.
preventive measures
Regular maintenance: Clean the mold and guide wheel weekly, check the bearing lubrication and gear oil level monthly, and replace the lubricant quarterly;
Operator training: Familiar with equipment structure, able to quickly identify abnormalities (such as abnormal noise, changes in wire quality);
Record faults: Establish a fault log, analyze patterns (such as a mold being prone to wear), and replace vulnerable parts in advance.
Through the above methods, operators can quickly locate and solve common faults of the wire drawing machine, reduce downtime, and ensure stable production. The key lies in daily maintenance and experience accumulation, achieving “early detection and early handling”.
